The Michigan History Center is creating stories, activities, and teaching resources for educators to use with students.
The stories below focus on the Tribal Nations living in Michigan before and during the Statehood Era. This was a time of radical change for the Anishnaabe People living in Michigan. What was life like at the beginning of the Statedhood Era? How did it change? Why did it change? How did Anishnaabe people negotiate, navigate, and generate change during this era?
Overall, these stories will help students understand how life radically changed for the Anishnaabe people during the Statehood Era. In addition, students will explore individual stories of resilience and resourcefulness of indigenous people. These stories are part of a larger collection of material within the Statehood Era (1787-1840).
