The Michigan History Center is creating stories, activities, and teaching resources for educators to use with students.

The stories below focus on how land use and ownership changed during the Statehood Era. How does land ownership change? How much did land ownership change during this era? Who gain land and who lost land?

Overall, these stories will help students understand how drastically land changed hands from Michigan’s Tribal Nations to the United State government.  In addition, students will explore how people negotiated these changes. These stories are part of a larger collection of material within the Statehood Era (1787-1840).
